Prosperity Doctrine???
Lately, I have read a few great books by authors not writing from a biblical or christian world view. Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki, Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill and The 9 Steps to Financial Freedom by Suze Orman. Each of these books bring out an interesting point, especially since they are not written for the “Christian” market. That point is that giving is an important part of wealth. As Americans we are wealthy. If you feel poor see my previous post about this. By giving more, we open up our lives to receive wealth in many forms. There is something about not trying so hard to hold on to money that the rich understand well. Solomon, the richest man to ever live, the man who has tried every pleasure and found them meaningless, knew what it was to give lavishly. He built the temple of our Almighty God! Does this mean that if we write a big check to the church this week that next week we will be millionaires? No, it doesn’t, but a lifestyle of giving does lead to being happy, successful and even possibly wealthy. Try giving more to see if God doesn’t make up the difference. Each of these “secular” authors found this biblical truth to be true. I think that while being a follower of Christ in no way guarantees riches, following God’s plans concerning money are the best financial plans that one can follow.

This is soooo true! You cannot “out-give” God. We have definately experienced this very truth in our own lives. We are by no means rich. In fact, our family falls way below the poverty level in the states. Yet, we have a beautiful home, beds to sleep in, food to eat, clothes to wear and hanging in our closets, a car to drive, and a washing machine (yes, in Honduras, this is a real luxury!). We continue to give back to the Lord and He continues to bless and provide. Isn’t this what the Bible says anyways…”test me and see if I will not pour out the blessings.” We could share story after story as “faith-based missionaries” how God has led us to give one month all we had, and how He has used many of you to give back to us to sustain us.
One specific instance a couple of years ago was when we were directors of an orphanage. We were out of money and it was a weekend and the banks were closed. It would be Monday before we could get any. We were in charge of over 30 girls and when I went to the bodega (storage closet), I saw that we only had tomato paste and noodles. I thought to myself, “well, we will have meatless spaghetti for Sunday lunch and hopefully have enough left for Sunday dinner too.” I praised the Lord for those noodles and tomato paste, even though that was all we had. The next morning, before church, a missionary called me and said, “Brooke, I just had a team visit us this week and I have a lot of ground meat leftover. Could you use it for spaghetti or something?” Wow! How specific is the provision of our God! He knows our every need and the needs of others. He wants to use “us” to help meet some of those needs and in return we receive His marvelous blessings!
